Dear Parents,

We would like to wish you a warm welcome back. We trust that you are feeling refreshed and recharged for the new semester. We extend a special welcome to our new students and parents who are joining our community – we hope that you will be very happy here. It was a pleasure to see so many of you in attendance at our PSG fair (pictures to follow next week), many thanks to our parent community for their hard work and ongoing support.

The students got straight back to work this week, with lessons beginning in all subjects. This year our A2 students will be undertaking the final year of their A Levels – so now our school educates young people from G1- 12.

Secondary External Examination Results: AS Level and IGCSE

This was our first set of AS Level results in the history of the school. Our students rose to the occasion to meet the challenge with great success. In total, 64% of AS Levels were awarded the top two grades.

Meanwhile, at IGCSE our students obtained A*-A grades in half of their grades. They maintained our outstanding performance in pass grades by securing 98% of grades A*-C.

This reaffirms our status as a top international school in China. Our current A2 year will complete their secondary schooling with us at the end of this academic year. We are, therefore,  excited about preparing our senior students to apply to the world’s top universities for the first time in our tenth anniversary year.

Primary External Examination Results: Checkpoint (Grade 5 last year)

We are proud to announce excellent Checkpoint results for last year’s Grade 5 cohort. They sat exams in English Language, Maths and Science. These are externally assessed by the world-renowned University of Cambridge in the U.K. Students from all over the world take these exams and measured against each other. These were the equivalent IGCSE average grades our students attained in each subject:

Maths: A*

English: A

Science: A

As you can see, this was an outstanding achievement by our students in our first year of doing this. Secondary now look forwards to their new charges doing similarly well at IGCSE and A Level. We would like to thank our G5 teachers for all the hard work they put in to prepare our students and you, our parents, for the strong support you gave your school throughout the preparation.

Uniform Policy

In order to maintain our standards and consistency in the wearing of proper school uniform, which you can remind yourself of by looking in your son/daughter’s planner. Please note formal school footwear should be black, without coloured laces, logos or soles. We would like to thank you all for your support and cooperation in this matter. Please do put a note in the planner if there are any problems or queries.

School Calendar

Attached are the latest School Calendar 2017-18 and Form Tutor Contact List for your information.

Please use the attached School Calendar, but not student planner.

Leave of Absence Requests

Students must attend school regularly and be punctual. Good attendance enhances the chances of success in school and in the work force. The attendance information is issued in the semester reports.

As a general rule we do not authorise absences unless they are related to a medical need and so will be recorded in the school as unauthorised. If your son or daughter is sick, please contact their Form Teacher directly. If they require three or more than three days sick leave request, please provide a doctor’s certificate. For personal absences separate from medical needs, please contact the Head of Secondary Ms Bonnie Cai (bonniec.pd@suis.com.cn ) for consideration, evidence related to the request will be necessary. Absence has an impact on your child’s education and so we would urge you to support your son or daughter in their attendance.

If your son or daughter needs to leave school early please contact form tutor or Admin staff.

When a student returns to school, he/she should find out what work was missed and complete it within a reasonable amount of time, as decided by the teachers.

For any admin support or urgent absence requests, you may contact school secretary Ms. Cici Ye (ciciy.pd@suis.com.cn ; 5886 9990 ext.209) before 9 am on the first morning of absence. For school bus enquiries, please send the email directly to schoolbus.pd@suis.com.cn .

World Scholars’ Cup Report

While the summer holidays mark a well-deserved break after a tough academic year, they also give enterprising students a large window of time in which to develop themselves and to take part in a range of beneficial activities.

This summer, one group of students from SUIS Pudong Secondary certainly made the most of their holidays, by taking part in the international rounds of the World Scholar’s Cup. After a highly successful first round in Shanghai – in which all 24 participating SUIS Pudong students made it to the next stage –  20 intrepid students set out for Hanoi, Athens and Cape Town to pit their wits against leading students from around the world, in order to qualify for the prestigious Tournament of Champions at Yale University.

The competition was fierce, but the students did themselves proud in their essays, debating and quizzes, with over half of them earning enough points to make it through to the finals. All of the students won medals, and a number of them did exceptionally well; special credit goes to Alicia Wen, Elaine Huang and Elena Orihuela Sanz, who made it through to Yale despite being among the youngest participants in the Hanoi round, Rina Mitsutuka, who won medals in 10 of the 12 categories and, in particular, Katie Zhang, who received a trophy for the second highest overall score in the Cape Town round!

Many thanks to the parents who made these trips possible and of course Mr MacDonald and Ms Shen for their organisation and preparation.
