Building on the remarkable success of the previous two years, Shanghai United International School Pudong Campus proudly hosted its third annual Bring and Swap Market in celebration of global Earth Day, continuing a student tradition that has become one of the most anticipated events in the Middle School calendar.

What began in 2024 as a simple idea to encourage students to think differently about consumption has grown into a meaningful whole-school initiative that combines sustainability, community spirit, and charitable giving. Led by Mr. Hoban our Head of Middle School Humanities, the project has developed year by year into a powerful example of how environmental awareness can be brought to life through student participation.

In the week leading up to the event, Grade 8 students delivered an informative assembly that built on the foundations of the previous two years, exploring themes such as fast fashion, the growing culture of waste, the importance of recycling, and the role that artificial intelligence may play in the future of environmental protection.

During class time, students also designed bright and creative donation boxes for every homeroom and produced eye-catching posters that filled the school corridors, helping to build excitement and reinforce the message behind the event before the market had even begun. Once the donation boxes had been delivered across the school, students began bringing in items each day, carefully recording every contribution on donation sheets in their homerooms as the collection steadily grew in the lead-up to April 22.

This year’s market was the largest and most successful to date, with students donating and exchanging hundreds of pre-loved books, toys, games, clothing, and household items, while also raising a record amount of money for the Heart to Heart, a Special Fund of the Shanghai Rende Foundation that supports children in need of life-saving heart surgery.

One of the most encouraging aspects of this year’s market was the way students embraced the educational value of the event. Rather than simply choosing items for entertainment, many students carefully selected books that could inspire future learning, including copies of The Diary of Anne Frank, Wuthering Heights, and several beloved titles by Dr. Seuss.

Watching students leave the market excited not only about sustainability but also about reading showed how the event continues to grow beyond its original purpose. The atmosphere inside the auditorium reflected that same spirit throughout the day, with music playing, students dancing and singing, while members of the Student Council worked alongside Mr. Hoban to help deliver a vibrant and joyful experience.

Long after the final exchanges had ended, students were still talking enthusiastically about an event that once again demonstrated how environmental responsibility, educational opportunity, and genuine enjoyment can come together in one unforgettable school experience.
