Perseverance will allow our interests and passion to blossom for all to enjoy.

Today in our “Shine My Way” series, we hear from Louie Qian of Class 6F, who shares his journey through golf, programming and science, and the joy and surprises that have come along the way.

My name is Louie Qian from Class 6F, and I’m 11 years old. I have a wide range of hobbies, including golf, swimming, Go, chess, AI programming, and more.I first encountered golf at the age of six, introduced to it by my dad. I found the golf clubs fascinating, each one has its own purpose and performs differently depending on the terrain. With my coach’s guidance, I gradually fell in love with the sport. Although I’ve tried many other sports like football, basketball, fencing, skiing, badminton, and tennis, golf has become my number one passion.

I started practicing at driving ranges, then moved on to real greens to learn putting and bunker shots. At age eight, I stepped onto a real course for the first time. I still remember the soft grass beneath my feet, the flag fluttering on the green in the distance, and the joy I felt as I swung my first real shot.

Since I was nine, I’ve attended golf summer and winter camps on my own, which helped me improve significantly. The year 2025 has been a big milestone: I participated in my first official competition and placed 5th in my age group at the US Kids Golf Shanghai Tournament. In July, I achieved my first Hole-in-One at Hole 12 of the Nanshan Cui Valley Golf Course in Yantai, Shandong. It was an unforgettable moment! My coach and fellow players were overjoyed, and we celebrated together. My name was even engraved on the club’s official Hole-in-One board! I believe this achievement was not only luck, but also the result of years of dedicated practice. It motivates me to keep going. One day, I hope to represent China as a professional golfer that would truly be an honour!

Besides golf, I’m also passionate about AI programming, which keeps me thinking and problem-solving. I love challenging myself with tough problems. During the 2023 summer holiday, I participated in the National Youth AI Innovation Challenge. Competing against top young programmers selected from across China, I stayed calm under pressure and completed the programming tasks with speed and precision, and proudly earned the Gold Award in the Autonomous Driving Smart Car Competition, representing Shanghai.

I truly love our school. In addition to academic learning, we are offered many opportunities to express ourselves and showcase our talents. I especially enjoy maths and science. Every year, we have science fairs across SUIS campuses. In Grade 4, I represented the Pudong campus with my teammate to present our science experiment and explain our methods to visiting teachers and students.

This year, I finished primary school and moved up to Grade 6. Looking back, I’ve realized that whether it’s progress in sports or improvement in my studies, it all comes from passion and perseverance.

I’m really thankful to be at SUIS Pudong, and the school feels like a second home to me. Whether I’m in the classroom or out on the field, there’s always something I enjoy. My teachers always encourage me to explore new interests and support me in chasing my dreams. That’s why, when it came time to choose a middle school, I didn’t hesitate, and I chose to stay at SUIS Pudong.

Now that I’m in Grade 6, with the same caring teachers and familiar friends around me, I feel steady and confident, and ready to take on new challenges.
