On December 18-19, 2024, our 11 G8 students joined hands with our 3 G10 students to embark on a challenging and exploratory journey—an adventurous practice expedition for the Bronze Level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Xishan, Suzhou. This experience not only tested their physical stamina, resilience, and teamwork but also significantly enhanced their overall abilities.

Upon arriving at the picturesque Xishan, the students first learned to read maps and use compasses for navigation. Over the next two days, they relied solely on these skills to undertake group-based outdoor trekking without mobile phones. Carrying all essentials—including sleeping bags, mats, cooking gear, and food—they warmed up under the guidance of their teachers before setting off on their journey.

Throughout the trek, students faced the dual challenge of carrying heavy backpacks and completing group research tasks, such as studying tea cultivation on the mountain and surveying local plant species. Collaborating across campuses, they learned from one another, encouraged each other, and overcame obstacles together, fully embodying SUIS Pudong’s core quality of “Collaboration.” Even when encountering occasional misdirection, they quickly adjusted and pressed on.

The students learned how to pitch tents and camp outdoors, as well as cook meals using ingredients they brought. From hotpots to stir-fried dishes, each group shared their creations, enjoying the rare joy of dining under the open sky.
In the evening, a reflective session was held to review the journey’s highlights, recognize achievements, and address areas for improvement. This process deepened their understanding of the expedition and provided valuable lessons for personal growth. Under a starlit sky, the campfire night brought laughter and warmth, with roasted marshmallows adding a delightful surprise. Many students expressed that this unforgettable journey would remain a cherished memory.

This practice expedition in Xishan marks only the beginning of their Bronze Level journey. Ahead, they will complete the official expedition and engage in three additional six-month projects: volunteering, skill development, and physical exercise. These experiences will not only hone their abilities and courage but also further reflect SUIS Pudong’s Eight Core Qualities.
We look forward to witnessing these brave and dedicated students continue to shine as they write new chapters in their journey of growth!
