At SUIS Pudong Primary, there’s a dynamic coaching duo behind the basketball court energy: Coach Young and Coach Kimi.
One is calm and meticulous, the other energetic and cheerful. Together, they lead the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams with warmth and expertise. In the eyes of students, they’re not just coaches, they’re the teachers who truly “get” kids. Behind their teamwork is a shared commitment to passion, professionalism, and purpose.

 

Coach Young: Five Years of Dedication, A Lifetime of Love for the Game
“Basketball is more than a sport, it’s a journey of emotion and growth.”

Since joining SUIS Pudong in 2020, Coach Young has dedicated five years to building and leading our primary boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. Every autumn, he welcomes a new group of students with eyes full of excitement; every summer, he sends off graduates filled with memories, resilience, and team spirit.

As head coach, he holds fast to the principle of “educating through sport, learning through competition.” He constantly updates his coaching philosophy through study and practice, earning credentials including CBA E-level coach, Shanghai Level 1 referee, and Youth Basketball Coach. Blending American creativity and European tactical discipline into his sessions, Coach Young has built a comprehensive, student-centered training system that helps each child grow at their own pace.

Over the past five years, the teams have participated in more than 60 games annually, winning titles like the SSSA League Championship, SUIS Cup Championship, and second place in the Pudong Sunshine Sports League. But for Coach Young, the real reward lies in the moments between games — the focused pre-game huddles, the post-game reflections, and the unwavering sense of team unity that shines brighter than any trophy.

 

Coach Kimi: Coaching Across Sports, Guiding with Heart
On the other end of the court, Coach Kimi brings equal energy and dedication.

He currently coaches the U13 and U15 basketball teams and leads the U9 Flag Football team. From age groups to sports styles, his coaching responsibilities are wide-ranging, but his attention to detail and care for each student remain constant.

A certified CBA E-level coach, FIBA Level 1 coach, and national second-class referee, Coach Kimi believes sports are not just about competition, but about building character and resilience. Under his leadership, both his basketball and flag football teams have earned accolades at Pudong district and SSSA League competitions. More importantly, his players learn the value of teamwork, perseverance, and respect — both on and off the court.

During training, Coach Kimi encourages students to think independently and adjust in real time. Off the court, he often chats with them as a mentor and friend. “What I hope they take with them isn’t just muscle memory,” he says, “but long-term confidence, health, and a true love for movement.”

 

Beyond the Game, A Path of Growth
On the court, they are strict and focused;

For both coaches, the goal of sports has never been just about winning.

It’s about helping children discover courage, build discipline, and learn to rely on one another — in every sprint, every dribble, and every rebound.

“When we see students lift each other up, cheer each other on, and get back up after falling, that’s the moment we know sports is doing what education should.”
