Over the weekend of November 30th to December 1st, a group of 11 students from our Middle School G6 and G7 cohorts took their first foray into the world of the World Scholars’ Cup; an international teams based competition which is attended by global scholars’ the world over.

Situated in a school way out in Jiading, our intrepid scholars boarded the bus at 6.45 a.m. on the last day of November to make the nail biting journey to the first round. Everyone was full of trepidation, wondering what would unfold over the course of the day / wondering what potential challenges and celebrations lay ahead.

Upon arrival, they experienced their first opening ceremony; authentic and quirky, it was a real experience to see the lead Daniel Berdichevsky and his colleague take to the stage to liven up the crowds. Within the auditorium were over 30 schools and their teams, primed and ready for action! And then onto the moment everyone had been waiting for… the advent of the competition? The students were split into two groups; those that would debate in the morning and those that debate in the afternoon. Other competitions included the Scholars ‘challenge; a multi category quiz, Collaborative Writing and the infamous Scholars’ Bowl.

Our scholars’ performed absolutely marvelously; a plethora of medals for all of the students involved; achieving silver and gold medals across all categories in the senior division, 7 challenge medals, plaudits for the team debate and the highlight of 3rd place for Tiffany Antonio of Grade 6 in the Writing Challenge. Awards even extended to a silver top scholar and a gold top scholar. All teams and students qualified for the global round. Our students went home on their final evening, tired but undoubtedly elated!

Awards aside, last but not least, let’s not forget, the addition of a trusty alpaca to the life of every student in our World Scholars’ Team as a lasting reminder of their amazing regional experience. Bring on the global rounds!
