Around November, the teacher gave me two very long and difficult scores. I remember reading Beethoven’s music on the school bus and not believing I could pull it off. The rehearsals were not very successful in the beginning. When I was playing Beethoven’s Spring Sonata, I often found myself playing at a different pace with the violin player. The piano solo part of the Caribbean was full of eight degree chords and a lot of fast playing. I had to practice it for a long time. However after a lot of rehearsals, we were able to play it, and the music came out coherent and beautiful; a harmonious symphony of different instruments .In the end I found that I have enjoyed playing onstage with my peers. It may not have been the best performance, but it was an unforgettable experience.

Before I came to the stage, Chinese traditional music was echoing around my ears. I was trying my best to improve myself by focusing on every single movement in my piece. The audience only sees the end product and not the hard working and months of continual preparation. It takes me half a day to practice a movement which lasts just a few seconds. As we all know Peking Opera is called the art of performance, therefore my main aim was to ensure that the audience enjoyed it.

Our performance took the longest time to prepare, and we were still practicing one hour before the concert! At first we lost some time with a problem with the music sheet, and in fact, the final performance actually consisted of many different music sheets. We had to learn resilience. It changed so many times from two performers to three for example so we had to do the transposition a few times.

I was pretty nervous on the stage, but luckily, everything turned out well for the performance. Everyone contributed a lot to the concert. Many Student Voice members were making the posters, writing their lines, giving out the tickets, while at the same time also doing the WSC competition. I was pretty surprised when I saw the size of the audience but I was pleased as it wouldn’t be a show eithout them!

Of course, the person who contributed the most is Ms. Yoyo, who organized this activity, supervised our performances and tried to overcome many the difficulties. Thank you Ms. YoYo!

I hope this will be the start of a long-time tradition in SUIS Pudong!
