Dear Parents,
I am writing to you this week from the USA, as you know Mr MacDonald, Ms Shen and Mr Odunlami have taken a group of students who qualified to take part in The World’s Scholar’s Cup final at Yale university.
Mr MacDonald and myself have stayed on in America to meet representatives from some of the most prestigious universities; to form relationships and hear tips about how to ensure that our students are fully prepared for Post 18 education.
I have heard good things about the competition with several of our students gaining recognition in different areas- watch this space for a full report next week.
‘More Than Aware’ Charity Event: Breast Cancer Prevention and Recovery
On Thursday Student Leaders Dara Lesniak, Karen Chiwandamira, Cindia Li and Hannah Chen ran a hugely impressive event with all the proceeds going to ‘More Than Aware’ a Shanghai based charity. Suzanne from the group spoke to us about how important it is to be pro active in the fight against breast cancer. She introduced us to us 20 breast cancer ‘thrivers’ (they don’t call themselves braest cancer survivors as that would imply they simply breathed while something happened to them- these women thrive).
In China it can cost 6,500RMB to make wigs for those who lose their hair so our students ‘pledged their ponies’ – onewig can used several times and therefore help many people. The thrivers were overwhelmed by our students’ generosity; and were tearful with gratitude when they saw so many students –and Ms Fudge bravely take to the stage for a hair cut!. Equally the students were in awe of the thrivers who taught us a dance and song using sign language and who have been through so much.
Next week we will have a full report including the total raised. A huge well done to Dara , Karen , Cindia Li , Hannah Chen and their team who worked so hard to make the event such a success.
Pictured below- the thrivers meet and greet the stduents, Jesse cuts Ms Fudge’s hair, Dara, her sister Yaryna and mum wait to have their hair cut, the students pledge their ponies, Cata winces as Evelyne cuts her hair and Karen with Suzanne.
Each week we will include a ‘focus’ to introduce you to our school community , this week:
Focus on: A Level Common Room
The most important part of Post 16 education is independence- the students are becoming young adults and are fully responsible for their learning. To this end we wanted to provide them with an appropriate space to study (and sometimes relax -just a little!).
The A Level students worked together to design their space and kit it out with the essential. Pictured below is the tranquil space they have created.
