20th October 2017

Dear Parents,

It really has been an action packed start back to school. Do read on to hear about some of the wonderful events that have been taking place.

What has struck us the most this semester is how engaged our students are in these events- taking on roles of responsibility and organsising elements of the event. Our thriving Student Voice has lots more in the pipeline too so do get involved!

This week it was our honour to announce that Owen Hu and Holly Watson were made our new Head Boy and Head Girl respectively. These two young people have worked tirelessly for our community. They will be featured in next week’s edition of this newsletter so that you can hear about why they were chosen for this prestigious honour.

Hispanic Day on Thursday 12th October

The Spanish Department ran an exciting event to celebrate the link that many people, and many different countries and cultures all around the world have because of the Spanish language.

Some of our native speakers students ran the assembly that day. Valeria Galvan Sotres (IG1) gave us a very interesting presentation about how Spanish has become a common link for all Spanish speakers. Also, there was a beautiful performance from Elena Orihuela Sanz (G7), playing the well-known Spanish song “Que viva España” on guitar and Cata VAZQUEZ also in G7 with her melodious voice singing the Argentinian song “Aprender a volar”. Finally, they were presented with their DELE certificates.

Throughout the day, Spanish students from Grades 6, 7 and 8 learnt how to prepare some traditional dishes from Mexico and Spain. They really enjoyed the cooking workshops but they enjoyed even more eating their own food!

At lunch time, we were delighted to join the Spanish Department, the native speakers, our A Levels students and some parents for an Hispanic meal. They all had the opportunity to enjoy several Hispanic dishes prepared by the native speaking parents and the Spanish teachers.

This was only the start: our first time celebrating the Hispanic Day. It was a great experience for everyone involved and we are looking forward to next year celebrations, which will bring even more surprises!

The Spanish department is really grateful to those parents that collaborated with us to make this day so special. It would have not been possible to run the events without their cooperation and effort. Muchas gracias to:

Our trip to Rolex Shanghai Masters by G6

Grade six write, “We went on a fieldtrip to the Shanghai Rolex Tennis Masters on October 9th. This is a competition where the best players around the world play.It was a great trip! We arrived at the park around 12 o’clock. It was huge. There were 17 outdoor tennis pitches and two huge stadiums.

We watched the first game in the biggest indoor stadium. The players were Ivo Karlovic from Croatia and Feliciano Lopez from Spain. Both players were very talented and the points were super close. But at last, Feliciano Lopez had a narrow win. It was so exciting to watch to top players from around the world playing so close to us.

The whole park was massive and contained places for food, drinks and souvenirs. Top tip- always bring your own food and drinks because everything inside the park was extremely exensive!

We first went to one of the big courts and ate lunch, some of the teachers bought pizzas ,which made us jealous! After we ate our lunch ,some students bought ice-cream it was frozen solid luckily we had a beautiful day so they could wait until the ice-cream slowly melted in the sunshine!

We watched a lot of rounds ,and walked around a lot to watch different matches. We saw a very long match as they kept tying at match point!

It was pretty sad for the player who lost, as it must have been exhausting to tie at every round, he was pretty cross when he lost- he actually broke his tennis racket! The players were so passionate!

I really enjoyed the day, because I learned about the rules of tennis, and I think watching professional players from all over the world, gather around to compete against each other is a great experience for us students to watch and learn.

Thank you so much to the teachers who took us and who made the day possible, especially Mr. Romano for organizing. It was such a superb day!!!”

With Best Wishes,
