As spring quietly arrives on campus, SUIS Pudong welcomed one of the warmest moments of the new semester: Hug Week.

During lunchtime, the school’s mascots, Big Lion Lad and Little Dragon Girl, made a surprise appearance in the Grade 1 classrooms, bringing students a special kind of encouragement: a big hug to “recharge” their energy for the term ahead.

The lovable Big Lion Lad and the lively Little Dragon Girl were soon surrounded by excited children. With guidance from homeroom and counselling teachers, students lined up to take part: waving, high-fiving and sharing warm hugs. The classrooms quickly filled with laughter and cheerful conversation.

As students stepped into the mascots’ welcoming arms, some looked up with bright smiles, while others curiously reached out to touch the soft furry paws, turning the moment into a small sensory adventure. These simple interactions brought pure and genuine joy.

The happiness was not limited to the children, teachers nearby also found themselves smiling just as warmly.

Big Lion Lad and Little Dragon Girl then continued their visits around the campus, meeting students from other grades and sharing the same warmth through their hugs.

While waiting their turn, students chatted animatedly, trying to guess who might be behind the mascots and imagining what kind of “good energy” the hug might bring. Their laughter and curiosity made the campus feel especially lively.

Perhaps the magic of a hug lies in its simplicity.

In just a few seconds, it can offer comfort, connection and a sense of being welcomed.

Throughout Hug Week at SUIS Pudong, warm embraces lit up smiling faces across the campus from Grade 1 to Grade 9.
In the gentle rhythm of spring, the campus felt even more vibrant with warmth and life.
